Celebrate National Eye Exam Month with a Visit to Your Eye Doctor

With a new school year beginning all over the country in the next couple of weeks, we thought it was perfect time to remind parents to schedule an eye exam before your child starts fall classes. It is estimated that up to 25% of school-aged children have vision problems that can ultimately affect one’s learning.  Make sure to see a qualified eye doctor for a full exam and not simply rely on the very basic, and lacking, eye test administered at school. Send them back to school knowing that their vision is healthy and that they’re capable of seeing and learning at their optimal level. Children should first start receiving eye exams at six months of age, again at three years old, and when entering kindergarten at five or 6 years of age. If vision problems are detected, those who need corrective lenses should see their eye doctor annually. These exams can help avoid the worsening of vision problems and can even detect other health maladies.

August is also a good time to schedule your own eye exam also. It is National Eye Exam month, making it an easy annual reminder to take care of your eyes. As we age, our vision continues to change and it’s important to adjust often to these changes in order to avoid eye strain and fatigue. Your eyes are one of the most important organs in your body and need special care in order to maintain their very complex structure working optimally. Schedule your annual eye exam with Premier Eye Care; we are the Top-Rated Local® Optometrist in the Clarkston area.

Jameis Winston’s squinting problem

Watching the probable Heisman Trophy winning QB of Florida State squint his way through the game this weekend was frustrating for me as an eye care professional. (I wanted to help!) Thankfully, he has been treated by a colleague in Tallahassee with what is the perfect solution for him – Ortho-K!  Ortho-K is a safe, effective, non-surgical vision correction procedure. Excellent vision can be obtained without the need for day time contacts and glasses by utilizing a special retainer lens that is worn during sleep.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Unfortunately, diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in the United States.  The eye is the only structure in the body that allows us to directly visualize microvascular changes.  Because of this, we are able to detect the presence of systemic diabetes if diabetic retinopathy is present.
