Orthokeratology and Your Child’s Vision

There are few things more distressing to a parent than watching their child struggle with physical issues that they can’t quite fully explain. Being able to pinpoint a vision problem and the extent of said problem can be especially frustrating for parents as full knowledge of how that child really sees can be elusive as vision of course, is highly relative and extremely subjective to the individual themselves. Children can go for years without understanding that their vision is actually compromised and corrective lenses are needed. Obviously, regular eye exams by a qualified optometrist in Clarkston is the best way to avoid unchecked eye and vision problems, but what happens if your child’s vision continues to worsen? What options does a parent have to help stop the worsening of eye issues?

When it comes to myopia and hyperopia, much research has been dedicated to finding how orthokeratology can lessen the worsening of decreased vision in children. In one study of 16 myopic children, between the ages of 11 and 16, orthokeratology contact lenses were shown to dramatically reduce existing myopia in the central 20-degree visual field. These children were shown to have changes comparable to myopic adults after corneal refractive therapy.

Orthokeratology therapy, shown to slow the worsening of vision in children is also beneficial as it is a safe treatment that allows children to experience clear vision free of glasses or daytime contacts. Children and teens alike are able to participate in sports and activities without the worry of corrective lenses, lessening vision costs to their parents over time. Children also experience better self-esteem and higher confidence by not having to wear glasses that alter their appearance.

A thorough eye exam at our office in Troy is required to find out if your child is a candidate for orthokeratology and will need a fitting, but can start experiencing better vision within just a few weeks of wearing the night time lenses. Schedule your child’s eye exam by calling Premier Eye Care at 248-241-6537.

How Orthokeratology works

Though orthokeratology has been utilized by optometrists for decades, little is known of the treatment course that allows people with affected vision to be able to see clearly throughout the day, without the aid of contacts or glasses. By gently molding and reforming the eye’s cornea, the OrthoK lens helps restore wearers experience near perfect to perfect vision again.

An orthokeratology lens is worn at night and works much in the same manner as orthodontia. Just as braces help to adjust the placement of teeth within one’s mouth, OrthoK lenses work to adjust the cornea. As the front surface of the eye, the cornea works to focus the eye. When the cornea is malformed, various vision problems can develop and usually worsen over time. Those with nearsightedness, or myopia, are usually the best candidates for orthokeratology treatment. Most patients start to see improvement in their vision within 10 to 14 days and often experience 20/20 vision with the continued use of OrthoK lenses. The effects are not permanent however and not everybody is a candidate for these specialized lenses. It is a great alternative for those who are anxious about, or unable to undergo, Lasik surgery.

Orthokeratology is an excellent method of molding the cornea back into its most functional shape. After measuring your cornea, an eye doctor fits custom ortho-k lenses to the cornea in order to help manipulate your cornea producing better vision without the need to wear daily corrective lenses like contacts or eyeglasses. The benefits of orthokeratology include:

  • Reducing or eliminating the need to wear corrective lenses during the day
  • Ortho-k lenses are worn during the night while you sleep
  • May prevent the worsening of one’s vision and  the increase in eye prescriptions

Ortho-k allows people who work in situations where contacts or glasses could become a problem to fully be able to avoid having to wear corrective eyewear during the day. Athletes can also enjoy sports without the cumbersome need of glasses. Ortho-k lenses can also be beneficial for those who enjoy swimming, skiing or even gardening. Anytime that glasses or contacts become more of an inconvenience or hassle than they are worth, ortho-k lenses can offer the benefit of replacement.

There are certain situations and individual issues that could prevent some people from being able to benefit from orthokeratology. Only a qualified eye doctor can decide if a patient is a good candidate for ortho-k lenses. The cost of the therapy often inhibits individuals from being able to utilize ortho-k lenses as they are often much more expensive than standard lenses. Vision insurance companies do not often cover the costs of orthokeratology treatments. Those that have a fear of touching their eyes are also not the best candidates.

As an optometrist in Troy, Dr. Garretson is fully knowledgeable about the processes and science behind orthokeratology. After a full eye exam at the Troy office, the eye doctor can determine if orthokeratology is appropriate for you and your vision. Call us to schedule your appointment at 248-241-6537.

Orthokeratology Experts

Imagine having near-perfect to perfect vision all day long without the help of contacts or eyeglasses. Orthokeratology lenses have helped many vision-impaired patients experience great vision, some, for the first time in their lives. Much like a dental retainer works within your mouth correcting misaligned teeth, orthokeratology contacts work to reshape the curvature of the eye. Worn while you sleep, these highly breathable lenses gently manipulate the soft and moldable corneal tissue, reducing the need for corrective lenses during the day. Wearers begin to experience better vision within just a few days, though full results can generally be seen after two to three weeks. FDA trials have shown a success rate of over 65 percent achieving 20/20 eyesight and 90 percent experiencing 20/40 vision or better. Orthokeratology, also known as corneal molding, works for both near and farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (the need for bifocals). Corneal molding can slow or even completely stop worsening of vision problems. There is also zero possibility of having permanent negative effects, though after time, the cornea will start to misshapen if the nighttime lenses are not worn on a somewhat consistent basis.

Though ortho-k lenses aren’t appropriate for everybody, Dr. Garretson’s office in Troy will help you decide if these lenses could be beneficial for you. The staff at Premier Eyecare believes in the efficacy of ortho-k lenses and look forward to helping you through a complete consultation regarding this, or any of our other optical services. Best Vision-Protecting Tips

Much like being tall or naturally good lucking, it seems that people often believe that good vision is a simple matter of luck. That somehow, you were blessed in some way to not have to experience blurry vision or eye problems. The truth of the matter, however, is that we all can protect our vision and limit the amount of vision loss that we may experience during our lifetimes. Follow these helpful tips to protect the health of your eyes and your vision:

  • Make routine visits to your eye doctor. As an optometrist in Clarkston, we have seen the difference having regular eye exams can make. Being able to find indications of issues long before they become actual eye problems is an important element to every comprehensive eye exam. It is generally recommended that those in their 20’s get an exam every two years, increasing to yearly for those reaching their late 30’s and beyond, unless of course, you already have existing issues. Then an annual checkup is imperative.
  • Limit UV exposure. Wearing sunglasses not only lets you appear way cooler than average, the right sunglasses actually protect your eyes from UV damage. Make sure that that the sunglasses you choose have 100% protection against ultraviolet rays.
  • Protect your eye from injuries. According to the US Eye Injury Registry (summary report 1998-2002) more than 2.5 million eye injuries occur every year and 50,000 people are left with permanent partial or full vision loss. Because 90% of those injuries could have been prevented with protective eyewear, it’s imperative that you wear goggles while working around the house, with construction materials, machinery or solvents of any kind. Make sure to always guard your eyes.
